It doesn’t have to be a prayer
it could simply be a moment
between wisps of coffee steam
at 6 am
staring at a poster
that’s peeling at the corner
and thinking about how your day will begin
It doesn’t have to be a prayer
it could be a walk in the park
on the days when your bed feels too enticing to leave
pulling a hoodie over a pyjama top
on a winter afternoon
as the light
begins to ease
It doesn’t have to be a prayer
it could be a rich tea biscuit
sat at the dining table at 3 pm
surrounded by
the fluttering leaves of to do lists
and ending with a ‘right then’
instead of an amen
It doesn’t have to be a prayer
it could be the breath between
sentences
spoken from the mouth of a doctor
entwined fingers
as you look into the void
between his mouth’s left and right molars
It doesn’t have to be a prayer
but it could be
if that is what your beliefs allow
It doesn’t have to be a prayer
so don’t feel like it should be
but remember to take a moment
for the here and now
